Land O’ Lakes, FL (PPN) – A growing sinkhole that started out as the size of a small swimming pool has swallowed two homes in Florida on Friday and officials are expecting it to continue to grow. No one was home when the homes were destroyed except animals and valuables that was saved by firefighters.
A nearby resident reported a depression that formed under a boat parked outside one of the homes at 7:21 a.m. at 21825 Ocean Pine Drive. Officials called a state geologist on the scene and he confirmed it was an active sinkhole.
“We got as much as we could as quickly as we could before it got too dangerous to be up there,” Pasco County Fire Chief Shawn Whited reported to the Tampa Bay Times.
One home was partial destroyed from the hole that was over 200 feet wide and 50 feet deep.
In 2012, the sinkhole had believed to have been stabilized on the same property that fell in Friday. Ten homes have been evacuated.
Sheriff Chris Nocco asked for prayers for the families.
“I ask that everybody out there please pray for the people in this community right now because as they go to bed tonight, I don’t know if they will be able to sleep,” according to WFLA.
By 7:00 pm (EST), the sinkhole was dormant and had not changed within the past hour but if it rains, things are likely to get worse, according to WFLA – Tampa.
This is a developing story.
