STEM GEMS Mentoring Pilot Project Sponsors 57 Young Ladies To See The Movie Hidden Figures

To commemorate the opening of the historic movie Hidden Figures on January 7th, the STEM GEMS Mentoring Pilot Project will be taking a total of 57 young girls to see the movie at the Malco Cinema in Gonzales followed by lunch and learn at Kamal’s Kafe where they will get to chat with real life scientists and engineers.

To be apart of this exciting event, participants were asked to send an email with their name, age, the current school attending and  the reason why this movie is important to you and what young girls can continue to do to be apart of history and how STEM can help achieve that endeavor.

According to Executive Director Alsie Dunbar, The STEM GEMS Mentoring Pilot Project would like to say congrats to these 57 amazing young women who have been selected to attend the viewing of Hidden Figures this coming Saturday:

The STEM GEMS Mentoring Project is a mentoring program founded by Alsie Dunbar and is designed to expose girls in elementary and middle school to science, technology, engineering and math. A native of Gonzales she is an engineer and scientist with over 17 years of experience in the chemical industry.
Dunbar started the program to mentor and serve as a role model for young girls interested in those fields of study because there is an under-representation of women and minorities in those professions. STEM GEMS is designed to help girls develop their talents and interests and has been incorporated at Pecan Grove and Gonzales Primary School with a high rate of success. The STEM GEMS Mentoring Project has mentored over 150 girls in the Ascension Parish area through the program in collaboration with the Ascension Parish School Board.

“It was mentoring that allowed me to be successful,” Dunbar said. “It is about investing in our youth and STEM GEMS is my way to pay it forward.”

Dunbar also hosts STEM GEMS Saturdays at various schools in the Gonzales area that Due to not being able to accommodate students through the two schools that she currently works with so that she can expose as many as she can to the wonderful world of STEM. the STEM GEMS Mentoring Pilot Project  has worked diligently in partnering with local businesses and other STEM professionals to bring STEM outreach to the following areas as well: St. Helena, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles and Iberville parishes.
