(PPN) – Escondido police responded to a call regarding the death of Elizabeth “Betty” Seitz, 70, in the 300 block of James Street. They arrived at 7:06 a.m. and spoke to her son Damon Seitz, 40, at the home while investigating.
The call was received at 6:48 a.m. from someone reporting that their family member died alone while unattended.
Damon pulled out a gun and confronted the cop while the others were outside. The cop fired three to four rounds in self-defense.
According to Lt. Justin Murphy, at 7:50 a.m., shots were fired inside the home and the family member was shot. One officer was inside and two were outside. They attempted CPR and called for medical assistance. Damon was taken to Palomar Hospital West where he died from injuries.
“For whatever reason, this person decided he was going to brandish a firearm and threaten the officers with that and they had to defend themselves,” Murphy said. “What caused that, or what happened with that, we’re not sure yet.”
The home is less than a mile away from Orange Glen Elementary School. Escondido police are asking for help from the public in solving this case.
