Charlottesville, VA (PPN) – Charlottesville’s Mayor called for an emergency meeting of state lawmakers on Friday to swiftly remove the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
Mayor Mike Signer stated the attack last week transformed the monuments from “”equestrian statues into lightning rods.” Signer wants Governor Terry McAuliffe to convene an emergency session of the statue assembly. “We can, and we must, respond by denying the Nazis and the KKK and the so-called alt-right the twisted totem they seek,” Mayor Signer wrote.
Signer originally voted against removing the statue but has since changed his views and wants the statue taken down.
“With the terrorist attack, these monuments were transformed from equestrian statues into lighting rods,” wrote Signer in a statement.
