Washington – Thousands packed the Washington’s National Mall in support of the March for Science to fight against Trump’s threats of budget cuts to agencies funding scientists’ work. Many around the world also joined the protest to remind everyone of the significance of science and its research.
The March for Science is the first step of a global movement to defend the importance of science in our everyday lives.
Demonstrators rallied together against lawmakers who are ignoring the fact and research in areas including climate change.
Despite the rain, the crowd was massive. They marched from the National Mall to Union Square. Popular scientist educator, Bill Nye told the crowd, “Save the world!”.
“We are marching today to remind people everywhere, our lawmakers especially, of the significance of science for our health and our prosperity,” he exhorted the crowd before listing off accomplishments directly to tied to scientific inquiry.
Trump’s budget would cut $12.6 billion from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Questlove, one of the event hosts and speakers, told everyone “We need to make sure science belongs to the people.”
Organizers main focus today was to persuade elected officials to adopt policies consistent with the scientific consensus on climate change, vaccines and other issues. They believed today was the perfect day to bring national attention to the issue as millions celebrate Earth day.
