Former daycare owner sentenced to 5 years

Baton Rouge, LA (PPN) – The Department of Children and Family Services, DCFS, revoked Shelia Newman’s daycare license and she continued to work illegally. Her first daycare in Baker, LA was closed after multiple rule violations.

Afterwards, she relocated and opened a discreet daycare across the street from her home on Prescott Road. In June 2015, Newman was booked and charged with negligent homicide and obstruction of justice.

Newman was arrested for leaving a 2 year old Angel Green in a hot van for more than 2 hours.

Shelia pleaded guilty Friday to negligent homicide in connection with toddler’s death. The judge ordered her to pay $6,075 for daycare and funeral expenses. These fees must be paid within the first three years of her five year probation period along with 300 community service hours.
