(PON) – The House Intelligence Committee held its first hearing on Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election Monday.
FBI Director James Comey confirmed publicly that the FBI is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 election.
Normally, the FBI would not conduct a public hearing but this is an unusual circumstance in public interest.
Comey said he had been authorized by the Justice Department to confirm the wide-ranging probe’s existence.
The FBI will follow all facts and give a fair, independent, and very impartial investigation.
He also confirmed that no evidence was found that supports President Trump’s wiretapping claims against President Obama.
“I have no information that supports those tweets,’’ said Comey, “We have looked carefully inside the FBI,’’ and agents found nothing to support those claims, he said.
The investigation will search for any information about whether Trump’s associates were in contact with Moscow
Roger J. Stone Jr., has been an adviser for Trump for decades.
He acknowledged that he had contact on Twitter with hacker Guccifer 2.0. Guccifer 2.0 is a mysterious online figure that is believed to be a front for Russian intelligence officials.
But Mr. Stone insisted in an interview that the contact had been brief and involved nothing more than the exchange of a few direct messages, well after the party committee had been hacked. “Even if he is a Russian agent, my cursory exchange with him happens after he releases the D.N.C. stuff,” Mr. Stone said on Saturday. “There’s only one exchange with him. I had no further exchanges.”
