Defending Champs SU will be No. 3 seed in SWAC Men’s Basketball Tournament

Southern University men’s basketball team won the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament and are looking to win it all again. The defending champions will face the number 6 seed in the first round on Tuesday, March 7.

Last year the Jaguars were ranked number 4 beating the number 3 seed Jackson State by one point.

Southern (14-17, 10-8 SWAC) came up short Saturday in their last regular season game against Texas Southern, 82-69. There were seven lead changes. The Jaguars took a 39-37 lead right before halftime after LaQuentin Collins made a 3-pointer with 47 seconds left on the clock.

Chris Thomas led SU with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Coach Roman Banks stated, “What we need to learn here is, it’s like I told them, it’s not the big things, it’s the small things we have to do to continue to win and to beat good teams like them. Sometimes you have to make a tough layup in traffic and that 50-50 basketball, you’ve got to come up with it.”

Southern leads the conference with 9 SWAC titles overall. SU women’s basketball team will take on Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m. and the men will play after in the tournament.
